Saving Shelter Pets

Saving Shelter Pets (SSP) is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization. SSP facilitates rescues from high-kill shelters, promotes spay & neuter programs, and works to give shelter pets the chance at life they truly deserve.

SSP is an all volunteer-based organization with volunteers located throughout the country. SSP relies solely on donations to continue their rescue and spay/neuter efforts.

Their Rescue & Transport Program focuses on saving cats and dogs from high-kill shelters in the Southeast and moving them to safe, no-kill rescues in the Northeast part of the US. All animals receive full medical care and then are quarantined at a boarding facility or in foster care until they are healthy to travel. SSP then uses professional transporters to safely transfer the animals from the Southeast to the Northeast where they have a much better chance at adoption. All veterinary, boarding, and transport costs are paid by SSP thanks to the generous donations of people like you! :)

SSP Bernies Buddies Program
Bernie was rescued from the streets of post-Katrina New Orleans by Jamie in September 2005. The connection was instant, love at first sight. Bernie was taken to the Lamar Dixon temporary shelter, where Jamie continued to watch over him. He was such a gentle soul, she could not bear to leave him behind to an uncertain fate. Battling red tape and bureaucracy, Jamie eventually was able to adopt Bernie and bring him home to Indiana. Although only two years old, Bernie had heartworm, and had to undergo uncomfortable and expensive treatments. But he was finally home, and was loved, spoiled and happy for the past several months.

Tragedy struck on February 22, 2006. A stray dog wandered into the yard and as Bernie tried to chase it away, he ran into the road and was fatally struck by a car. Jamie and family are heartbroken, and we share their grief. Although Bernie's life was cut short, he had such a big heart that he would want to give other dogs the second chance to find the love and happiness that he did.

With this in mind...

SSP started the Bernie's Buddies Heartworm Fund.

This fund will be used to help treat dogs with heartworm that SSP pulls in their rescue efforts. Heartworm positive dogs often require extended time in veterinary boarding while undergoing treatment. Although a very expensive treatment, these dogs all deserve the second chance to life that Bernie did, so please help support this cause by donating today.

SSP Spay & Neuter Program
Saving Shelter Pets' Spay and Neuter program was created to help eliminate pet overpopulation at the source! We target counties with low-income residents, local shelters with a high euthanasia rate, and a lack of spay/neuter programs already in place.

We operate using a certificate program. We find local veterinarians interested in participating in the program and willing to give SSP a lower rate on spays & neuters. Residents will buy a low-cost certificate through our program, and then we will pay the difference in cost to the vet for each surgery.

Our spay & neuter program launched on January 1, 2007 and we hope to provide our services to a different county every month!

SSP Puppy Promises Program
Puppy Promises is an intervention program created to save puppies before they ever enter the shelter environment (where they will be exposed to disease). Since foster homes are difficult to find, this program contracts with the owner to quarantine the pups at their home for 14 more days. At the end of this quarantine, the pups are turned over to Saving Shelter Pets to be transported to no-kill sanctuaries. Once the owner signs a contract, the pups are given vaccinations and de-wormed at no charge to the owner.

The Puppy Promises contract also stipulates that the mother of these puppies must be spayed at the expense of Saving Shelter Pets. Therefore, Puppy Promises not only saves puppies from the high threat of parvo in shelters; it eliminates future litters from the mother as well.

Puppy Promises focuses on pet over population one litter at a time.

Help save a life today! Sponsor a puppy for $65, which will cover all vetting and transport costs. Or sponsor a momma dog's spay for $50, which will not only make that momma very happy, but will be a step towards ending pet overpopulation. Or consider making a smaller donation towards our Puppy Promises fund - no donation is too small!
