Transport
Operation Roger...Truckers Pet TransportOperation Roger was founded by truck driver Classy Lady in September 2005 after Hurricane Katrina left many animals homeless or separated from their owners. Her vision grew rapidly from merely hearing about a local crisis, to learning about constant transport needs of other animals, to a desire to help these deserving pets get to safer homes nationwide. This is being accomplished by the willing help of many volunteer truck drivers. Classy Lady can relate to the feelings of loss as her trucking companion, Roger, a four-year old Toy Manchester Terrier passed away in June of 2005. Operation Roger is a unique group of kind-hearted, pet loving, volunteer over-the-road truck drivers who have become like family and discovered new friends. These drivers take the time and initiative to help rescue groups and individuals transport stranded, lost, abandoned, abused, or left-behind pets become united with their loving families in new protective homes Nationwide. We do not discriminate! We are a group that provides a central database for those involved in animal rescue. We post transports for many different rescue organizations in the U.S. and a few in Canada. We also post needs for home visits, shelter pulls, transport coordinators, and overnight stays (for pets in transport that need a one or two night stay during their trip). Our group is mainly database-driven and is moderated. This means you don't see a lot of the duplicate postings you see on other groups. It also means that every subject line immediately tells you if you need to bother reading the entire message or not. This is accomplished by requiring that all postings follow specific guidelines and that each one be approved by a moderator prior to posting. It may sound "strict" but trust me, it works wonderfully! I wish more of the groups to which I belong worked things this way. If you are interested in volunteering or if you are a rescuer who would like to post needs to our group, please join us! Together, we can make even more of a difference in the lives animals nationwide! The organization hopes the airlift will encourage more pilots to donate their time (and airplanes) to the cause, and bring attention to the plight of abandoned pets, which are euthanized at the rate of 4 million per year. Many of those animals could be saved if they could be transported from areas where there are too many pets to other parts of the U.S. where they are in demand. The event will also help to promote general aviation as a force for good in our communities, the organizers say. "General aviation in this country is threatened," says the group's Web site, citing Homeland Security directives and user fees. "We want to see general aviation perceived by the public accurately as a driving force in our economy ... We want to see general aviation free of these threats." Pilots who would like to volunteer to fly an animal rescue transport can visit the Pilots N Paws Web site for more info. Pilots N Paws does not directly arrange the flights, but acts as an information portal where pilots can find needs listed and contact the shelters to work out the details. In the 18 months that Pilots N Paws has been operating, about 600 pilots have signed up and over 1,000 pets have been saved. Click here for a recent USA Today story about the PNP 5000 event.
